Alan
McFETRIDGE
Alan McFetridge is a photographer born on a farm near Lake Rotorua, Aotearoa, now based in East London near the Thames River, United Kingdom. His first published picture was on the front cover of the Sunday Star & Times the day after the 1996 NZ election.
Deciding to heed the wisdom of Magnum Photographer David Hurn to be mindful of how photography is learnt, came to London and became an assistant of renowned conservationist and animal photographer Tim Flach. With eleven years of experience in advertising photography, change became necessary to find a more direct way to be deeply ingrained with the medium and the condition of Earth.
By 2016 Landscape Fire came into the frame and has since been the major focus. With studies of Canada, England, Australia and Greece; an independent body of work has emerged to strengthen understanding of Landscape Fire within eco-critical debates and developing methods for landscape stewardship. Although there is much uncertainty about exactly how the next few years will be, fires will intensify and adaptation is necessary.
