HUMPHRIES

Matthew Humphreys is a UK-based artist working with moving image, photography and installation. Widely exhibited internationally, his work explores themes of memory, perception and the body, often drawing on personal archives and intimate encounters. As a child of deaf adults, his practice is shaped by questions of translation, attention and visual communication.

Humphreys was selected for Bloomberg New Contemporaries and was awarded the Best Project prize at Celeste Visible White. His work has also received recognition through the Celeste Prize (Finalist, 2015 and 2017), the Aesthetica Art Prize (Longlisted, 2016), and FLUX: Artist Moving Image Festival at MK Gallery, where he won the festival prize in 2013. He has received multiple grants from Arts Council England, including a Project Grant in 2024 and earlier support through Grants for the Arts and the Artists’ International Development Fund in partnership with the British Council. Residencies include the Fire Station Residency with Acme Studios, the Florence Trust Residency, and a sound studio residency with Crate Athelstan.

His work is held in public collections including the British Artists’ Film and Video Collection, the British Council, Fondazione Studio Marangoni in Florence, Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, and the University of Rochester in New York, as well as private collections.

Humphreys studied MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins and previously completed a BA (Hons) in Film and Video at Newport Film School.
